Evaluation Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

By using specific elements, such as imagery and the idea of overlaying, there is a sense of connection between all three of the final products. I knew that I wanted all products to have some form of continuity and this was created by using the screenshots from the footage on the CD Digipack and Music Magazine Advertisement.

For example I have used side facing shots on both the CD Digipack and Magazine Advertisement where the actor is lip-syncing but his eyes are focused ahead. This is so that he is looking towards the camera and directly focused upon the audience, adding to the performance based element of my music video. Also the actor is wearing the same clothes for all three of the products which include a shirt, open buttoned, and black trousers which follows the ideas of my costume planning. The reason for this is to ensure that it appeals to the target audience as the actor needs to appear professional but relaxed/comfortable – also the reason for the addition of the microphone. Due to the planning of the mise-en-scene, I feel as though the calm atmosphere is communicated and appeals to the audience.

Furthermore, there is also the use of Black & White effects within all three products which keeps them minimalistic and simplistic, which was my initial intention. By looking at Jack Johnson’s album covers, I realised that all of them had a present colour scheme and that the mise-en-scene also matched.

From Here To Now To You

Therefore, I purposely chose to add the tint and change the brightness and contrast to match existing media products that are of the acoustic genre. For example the actual design for ‘From Here To Now To You’ is dominantly blue with a silhouette. This includes white typography which matches the clouds, which flows and matches the movement of clouds as the font is not on a straight line but rather creates a shape. Therefore, in my own products I have used white font, Tekton Pro, which matches the Black & White tint. However, I changed the opacity of the font so that the contrast isn’t too stark. Therefore the products are conventional in terms of fitting the acoustic genre category.

On top of that, I have also used the overlaying/masking technique on all three products to heighten interest and make it more appealing. This techniques adds a narrative to the video but is also present as a still on the CD Digipack and Magazine Advertisement.

On the CD Digipack there is an overlaid image of clouds and on the Magazine Advertisement there is an overlaid image of a galaxy – both of which are present in my music video. These effects work well as there is a sense of narrative typically within the acoustic genre. I had difficulty when producing this imagery in Premier Pro as it is a technique I had to discover through experimenting with different effects. Also, so that the footage didn’t look too placed and blended with the shirt I had to use a specific effect called Key Colour which allowed me to mask either black or white – enabling the blending. However in Photoshop, it is easier as the blending is smoother due to the definitive detail I could achieve using the brush tool and levels of opacity.

Some things contradict the continuity of the products e.g. the backgrounds. For both the CD Digipack and the music video, there is a plain black background whereas in the Magazine Advertisement there is a painting of a galaxy that I have produced. The reason for this was to make the product more aesthetically pleasing for the target audience. Also, this is the only product which features some form of colour and the reason for this was to enhance the galaxy and make it more explicit. However, in some aspects it is still a connection as it is an overlaid image in the music video.

Even though this is a contradictory factor, I do believe that the continuity is achieved through the actor’s composition, typography elements and also the use of overlaid imagery. Thus enabling the promotional package to work well together.
